Canon makes a 50 mm f/1.8 lens that is very reasonably priced, about $85 last I looked. It’s a surprisingly good lens. With your camera it would be equivalent in 35-mm terms to about an 85 mm, which is a nice length for portraits; and the wide aperture means you’ll be able to throw the backgrounds out of focus.

They also make an f1.4 version that costs about five times as much and is as nice as you’d expect for the price. One important difference is that on the 1.4 the front barrel does not rotate as you focus — that’s a great convenience if you’re using polarizing filters.

They also have a good ?105mm? macro lens that will do 1:1. Sigma makes a similar lens that is not as nice but costs noticeably less.

The 28-200 zoom mentioned above is equivalent in 35-mm terms to 45-320 mm — a very slight wide angle to a moderately strong telephoto.

My own set of lenses for a similar camera (350D) are all Canon: a 10-22 (~16-35 equivalent), a 17-85 (~28-135), a 70-300 (~110-480) and the above-mentioned 50 mm f/1.4. This give me one wide-aperture lens for shallow depth of field, and overlapping coverage from extreme wide angle to a pretty strong telephoto (although that lens isn’t sharp enough at its strongest setting), without any one lens having an extreme zoom range, which makes them more complicated and not so good optically. The 17-85 and the 70-300 have internal image stabilizers that make hand-holding practical in much less light. What I lack is a good macro lens (or any macro lens) although the 17-85 has moderate macro ability. Unfortunately none of these lenses are cheap (all but the 50mm cost more than the camera body), so this may not be terrifically useful to you. But definitely look into the 50 mm f/1.8 — it’s inexpensive and high quality and physically small; and it’s a great portrait lens and not too bad for general photography. And Sigma has a decent reputation in general; and as I said they’re less money than Canon.
