Wide-angle and a zoom lens for Canon EOS 40D?

I am set to buy a Canon 40D and searching for the most suitable Wide-Angle and TelePhoto lenses.
I tend to do lots of cityscapes/landscapes/candid photography and would like to venture in to wild-life sometime in the future.

Any recommendations/advice much appreciated!

You know that zoom and telephoto lenses aren’t the same thing, right? Telephoto lenses have longer focal lengths, wide-angle lenses have smaller. Zoom lenses can be either, and allow the photographer to adjust the focal length within a certain range. Prime lenses have a fixed focal length.

I would suggest you start off with either an all-purpose prime (50mm) or an all-purpose zoom (28-135mm or kit lens) before getting a wide-angle lens OR a telephoto. Adjust to your camera and get used to it before building on your lens collection.

The telephoto zoom that I use is Sigma’s 70-300 macro. It’s a little heavy without a tripod, but it works.

Looking for a new camera…is the canon eos 40d good?

I want to buy a new camera… and this 40d looks good but will it last longer than the last camera I bought. I want my new camera to be versitile , action shots as well as stills.
Anyone have insight?

Looks like you’re still a newcomer (at least in digital photography) and thus it seems that the 40D will be an overkill for you now. It’s a good camera, but It’s too good a camera for someone who don’t know how to use it.

If you want versatile camera that is able to shoot in fast speed, a DSLR does sounds good for you – but look for something more affordable at least for the time being. A Canon Digital Rebel XTi (400D) or even its previous model the XT (350D) is a great camera especially for a newcomer.

If you want a Nikon, you can get the D40 for ~$500, or it’s siblings the D40x.

Remember that since a digital camera is a piece of technology, it will be surpassed with a new camera in a relatively short term so I would recommend you to invest in lenses instead of camera bodies. If you can afford the Canon 40D with a good lenses with no problem, then go ahead. But if you’re in a limited budget, then you might consider the options I mentioned above.
