Alexandra and I thought it was a nice day to go for some ice cream in the city, so we got on our bikes and brought along a 7D to test its video capabilities. On the way, we filmed a few of the people cycling through Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

I’m going to a concert on July 17 and since my small digital camera broke, I’m being forced to take my dad’s CanonEOS 40D that I barely know how to use. Don’t get me wrong, I love this camera but never really worked with it. Actually, I’ve pretty much NEVER worked with a SLR, especially a DSLR.
Does anybody know the setting, or a good setting, that I should use during concerts?
And if so, is there a setting that I can use without using the flash? I tend not to use flash since it affects the images that I take.
Settings will depend on lighting conditions. If you don’t know how to use an SLR, put the camera in programmed exposure or (P) mode. This let’s the camera figure out exposure on its own. The flash will only deploy and fire if you press the button to pop it up.
You could also leave auto ISO on and the camera will automatically select an ISO as high as 800. If the venue is particularly dark, you might need to start with the ISO at 800 or 1600. As a rule, use the lowest ISO that will give you a proper exposure (meter reading is centered). What ISO you use depends entirely on how much light is available.
Finally, your lenses are another factor. You haven’t mentioned what lens you have on this camera. My 40D came with the EF-s 17-85 IS USM lens. While the lens worked well enough as I was starting out, it would not be my first choice for a concert today. Today, I’d want lenses with faster apertures (smaller f-number). In fact, when I shoot my friend’s band these days, I shoot primes rather than zooms specifically because they have faster apertures and often, better image quality.
