canon eos 40d or canon rebel xti?

Sunday Jun 14, 2009

i've had a regular slr for several years and so i've decided to move up to digital. i'm not an expert but i'm not a beginner. i plan to take pictures just for fun but i will be taking classes in photography in the next few months.
i'm really into clear, crisp pictures and i've been looking at different pictures that each camera takes and the EOS 40D looks better but it also seems more advance.

i will be using this for many years so over time i will gain more experience.

which camera would be good for me?
what are the differences in the two?

also!
what other cameras would be good as well?

thank you!

I seriously doubt you could tell the difference between the photos taken by an XTi and a 40D assuming you were using the same lenses. The lens you use is much more important than the camera body use.

That said I think it comes down to your budget and how comfortable you are with using the manual settings on your camera. The XTi is much more user friendly. It has several automatic modes so you don't have to worry about choosing the correct exposure. It can also be used manually.
The 40D is a much better camera though. It has a stronger build and has more advanced features.

Some of the technical differences would be that the 40D has up to ISO 3200 compared to 1600 for the XTi. This is good when photographing in low light situations
The 40D has the newer Digic III processor
The 40D has spot metering (focus).

All in all the 40D is a better camera but both will do a fine job. If you want to try something in between the two look at the XSi. It has some of the newer features incorporated into the 40D and is about $400 cheaper. You could use the extra money for a nice lens

I too was at this same stage, some time back and I just jumped in and bought a good Canon point and shoot . Then when I got good enough, I knew the answer better then anyone else

Get the Rebel and invest the extra cash in good, Canon lenses. By the time you are serious you will be able to use your good lenses on a EOS 50D or 60D or whatever new one is out.

Read the reviews of either then count the number of times the word 'disappointing' is used. Canon have had no innovation in their last few models and are rapidly being left behind. It's also the most expensive system to buy into by far.

So read all the reviews then go out and buy Pentax, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Some of the best prime lenses ever made are Pentax, ALL will work on their digital, ALL will be antishake as it's in the camera not the lens and actually works better than all the others as the sensor can rotate as well as move up and down. Pentax cameras are full of good innovations like these. You can bracket shots on a Canon, but with Pentax you can bracket for colour balance, contrast, saturation, sharpness as well as for exposure – good idea eh!

Here is a side by side comparison of these two cameras: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos400d%2Ccanon_eos40d&show=all

I suggest you buy the XTi and save your extra money for new lenses or other accessories as well. Someday you will want to upgrade camera bodies, so those will last you much longer. You may also be interested in the new XSi.
