I've collected a bunch of lenses for my EOS 30D, but now I'm taking an intro photography class that works entirely in film. Will my lenses be backward compatible with a 35mm Canon Rebel?
If your film body is also from the Canon EOS line, which is every SLR they produced after 1987, your lenses will continue to work. Canon's older film bodies (before 1987, such as the A1) used a different lens mount system. The old lens mount system was called FD and the new one is called EF.
But since the 30D has a cropped sensor, you're probably (also) using some Canon EF-S lenses, such as the Canon 18-55mm, the 17-85mm, the 17-55mm, etc. Canon's EF-S lenses have a smaller image circle than regular lenses. These lenses produce massive vignetting (black edges) when used on a film SLR. This becomes most noticeable at the wide end of the zoom. The same is also true for third party lenses that were 'made for digital', such as the Sigma DC line and the Tamron Di ll line. So check – you might need a different standard zoom/ wide angle zoom. All of Canon's primes and tele-zoom lenses are fine.
Best wishes with the class!
I purchased the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 8 MP about a week before christmas and I'm SO in love with it.
I love the details of the picture, but I'm curious to know if they could become better in any way.
People have been telling me that lenses would make the quality better?
I would like the image to look sharper, crisper, better?
And I really wanna do some macros!
Do you have any tips on lens or any other accessories that would help my photos?
Thanks!
A true macro can cost quite a bit.
As for the whole crisp and sharp thing, thats really up to you, and to some extent the settings in the camera. That kit lens can actually get pretty sharp zoomed to about the middle (not all the way in and not all the way out) and the aperture somewhere in the f/8 to f/16 range. Set your camera to Av, roll the wheel behind the shutter button until you set your aperture to 11 (just a number in the middle), press the shutter button half way and see what speed it gives you. If its less than 1/50th you will need to increases your ISO, just increase one step at a time as the higher ISO's give a lot of noise. Find a happy medium and shoot.
The first lens i recomend is the http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/169267-USA/Canon_6473A003_75_300mm_f_4_0_5_6_III_Autofocus.html it's a bigger zoom than your kit lens.
The second lens I suggest is the http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12142-USA/Canon_2514A002_Normal_EF_50mm_f_1_8.html It doesnt zoom at all, but it has an aperture of f/1.8 which is awesome with low light situations. It also is a bit sharper than your kit lens. It does these things better because it just has to do them at 50mm and not a whole zoom range.
For Macro or close up stuff you could just get one of these http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=search&A=search&Q=&sb=bs%2Cupper%28ds%29&sq=asc&ac=&bsi=&bhs=t&shs=&ci=158&at=Magnification_Set&at=Size_58mm&basicSubmit=Submit+Query it screws onto your lens just like a filter (you should always have a UV or sky filter on your lens more for physical protection than anything else). They make higher magnification ones as well.
I want to start using an SLR as I am tired of my P&S…
Is this a good camera to start with?
Yes, that is a great professional camera

I figured out how to make it so that I see the live view on the labtop, but how do I make it so that programs like Skype or Yahoo messenger can use it as a webcam? Some sites say that you CAN use it, but I forgot how. The Canon program enables me to select a program that I want to use the Camera as a webcam with, but what do I do after that? Thank you!
At the bottom of the page in the link below it states: In the Studio, Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the EOS 40D’s USB connection, or wirelessly or via Ethernet with the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3A attached.
Remote live view uses EOS Utility 2.0
As for using it as a webcam you may need to set the resolution lower.
I have some trouble here
I have an awesome camera, awesome lens. But new to it. lol.
Thing is, I do get some really awesome indoor shots, which you can tell it's SLR quality, but most of the shots are just a crappy compact digital still camera kind of shot.
What would be the reason behind this? Anyway I could always take good indoor shots that looks SLR quality? (I used a flash in both photos if that helps)
Here is a link that will help you a lot.

The built in flash is good for fill light outdoors (if you are close enough) but on board flash is on board flash, no matter what camera it's built into. You need a dedicated flash unit for your camera, one that tilts and swivels, and a diffuser or flash modifier will often come in handy as well.

The Canon EOS 400D is Canons follow up to the successful 350D but now carrying a 10 MP CMOS chip. It marries the power of digital photography with the feature.
