Which Camera? Nikon D50 or Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT?

Thursday Oct 30, 2008

Hey, Ive been looking for a camera for a couple days now and Ive come to a conclusion. The Nikon D50 with Nikon 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G Autofocus Lens for 500 dollars or the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT for 600 with Canon 18-55mm EF-S Lens. I am going to use this camera to take sports pictures and Im not sure which one would be best for that, keeping in mind the 100 dollar difference.

Here is a link of the D50

So wich camera do you think?

First of all, don't assume that Canon is best because you see so many of them at sports events. Canon has amazing marketing strategy, including loaner lenses – those HUGE ones that nobody can afford – that can be signed out at events. They cater to the professional crowd. Nikon did the same thing in the 60's and 70's to gain brand supremacy when they were trying to break into the USA.

If these exact packages are your only considerations, I would go with the Nikon for the lens alone. The Canon 18-55 EF-S is crap. Go here and get a second opinion on that: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-18-55mm-f-3.5-5.6-Lens-Review.aspx Even if it was a great lens, you would find the 55 mm focal length (88 mm 35 mm equiv.) is just too short for most sporting events.

The Nikon 28-80 lens (120 mm 35 mm equiv) is no great shakes either. It's not very well constructed, but at least it is optically better than the Canon you mentioned. See: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2880.htm

If it is possible to change your options, I'd think about getting the cheaper 55-200 f/4-5.6 DX lens. The focus is auto-slow, but just use manual focus to pre-set distances if that is a problem.

With either the Canon or the Nikon, you will end up wanting a better lens for sports, so consider that at the outset.

Does it matter what country a Canon EOS 40D body is made in if it has a USA warranty?

Thursday Oct 9, 2008

From what I have seen it looks like parts can come from all over but are still assembled to canon specs so it shouldnt' matter, Right?
How would you ever know if it has been properly inported? Is that the reason that some places on the internet sell them for such low prices? What about lenses, is the same true for them?

They are all made in the same place in the same way. If it does not have a US warranty it is only because it was originally distributed in a foreign market.. it has nothing to do with quality or it being made somewhere else.

Lenses for Digital Camera Canon EOS Rebel XT?

Thursday Oct 9, 2008

I am thinking about buying a Canon Digital Rebel XT. The one I am looking at comes with a EF-S 18-55mm lens. I took a photography class in college about 5 years ago but I really am drawing a blank of well, about everything. Besides, all of my work there was in film though this does seem quite a bit similar. From some things I have read, there is a difference between digital mm measurements and regular 35mm print film measurements. Can someone please explain to me what DIGITAL lenses would be good for what kinds of use? And this may be a dumb question but would my Canon Rebel EOS 35mm lenses interchange with this digital Rebel? Gee would be spectacular if it would but I'm guessing no. Thanks for all the help I'm trying to blow the dust off off of my brain.

The EOS Rebel XT will take all Canon EF and EF-S mount lenses that you already have. The different between the Rebel XT and a 35mm film SLR are the cropping effect since the sensor of the Rebel XT is smaller than a 35mm film. Therefore there is a 1.6x field of view crop. For example, your 35mm lens will become 56mm on the Rebel XT. The kit lens that comes with the Rebel XT is not very good but its a good value consider it whole less than $100. If you don't want the kit lens, you may want to get yourself a 17-85mm IS USM lens as your all around lens. If money is not a concern, Canon offers a wide range of L lenses. Go to their web site to check it out.

Will the circular polarizer I bought for my Canon EOS Rebel K2 work on the Canon XSi I'm getting soon?

Sunday Oct 5, 2008

I guess what I'm really asking is will a normal circular polarizer work on a Digital SLR?
I'm not too familiar with cameras and accessories. :d

As long as it's the same size across the front of the lens, it will work fine.

Just bought a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, where can I buy accessories?

Friday Oct 3, 2008

I'm looking for things like the eye extender, cleaning kit, etc. Not for lenses or flashes. Where can I shop online or in the US for accessories?
I bought it from Dell, they don't seem to sell accessories. I'm looking for specific answers, not to be told to ask someone else.

Hi BG. As specific as I can be… two of the largest photo related businesses are Adorama and B&H Photo. Google them and you will find all the accessories you need for your XT… BTW: Nice camera!!! Thanks for reading.

Is a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi too much of a camera for a beginner?

Thursday Oct 2, 2008

I have been interested in photography since I was very young and I would really like to get into it, but I just don't know where to start. I had a Canon PowerShot that cost about $250, but it's broken now, and I guess that I expected too much of it, but I was disappointed in it from the start.
Thanks for the help!

No I don't think so, though not only was it my first digital, it was my first DSLR. When I bought my new XTi I purchased a Tamron 18-250 f/3.5 macro zoom lens, and I love it … NO REGRETS what so ever.
